Asafoetida-Ferula asafetida-Heeng Kashmir

Asafoetida-Ferula asafetida-Heeng is a spice that is an integral part of the Indian cuisine. It is a natural medicine and a go-to home remedy for digestion-related problems. A recent project by the JKMPIC has given Kashmir a chance to taste the spice cultivated in its own land. The JKMPIC has planted 5000 saplings of Ferula asafoetida in 2019.

Pinenut fruit from Kashmir

Pinus gerardiana, also known as the chilghoza pine or Nuza, is a pine tree native to the northwestern Himalayas. It grows at elevations of 1,800–3,350 meters (5,910–10,990 ft) in China, Russia, Kashmir, Afghanistan, northern Pakistan, Waziristan, and some unknown pine species also found in northwestern India.

Pinus gerardiana is a monoecious species, meaning individual flowers are either male or female, but both sexes can be found on the same plant. The plant is pollinated by wind and is not self-fertile.

Pinus gerardiana has leaves (or needles) that are held in groups of three and can be up to 10cm in length. The cones, with their spine-tipped scales, can reach 20cm.
